Flea salivary allergens are a complex mixture of proteins and other compounds found in flea saliva that trigger allergic reactions in sensitive hosts. These allergens induce Type I and Type IV hypersensitivity reactions, leading to flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) in animals and localized or systemic allergic reactions in humans. The primary immunoglobulin involved is IgE, leading to mast cell degranulation and histamine release.
Drugs work by eliminating fleas, reducing inflammation, or modulating the immune response to flea saliva antigens.
