Overview

A fluorescent label, also known as a fluorophore or fluorescent probe, is a chemical group or protein that enables the visualization and quantification of biological molecules. These labels are typically conjugated to antibodies, ligands, or drugs to track their localization, movement, and interaction within cells or tissues using fluorescence microscopy and other imaging techniques (NCBI). While essential in biomedical research and diagnostics, fluorescent labels are not endogenous biological molecules and do not serve as therapeutic targets for treating diseases. Instead, they are utilized as exogenous tools to monitor disease biomarkers and the efficacy of therapeutic interventions (PubChem). Common examples include small organic dyes like Fluorescein and Alexa Fluor, as well as genetically encoded proteins like Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP). In clinical settings, they are increasingly used in theranostics and image-guided surgery to improve the precision of tumor resection (Nature Methods).

Mechanism of action

Fluorescent labels function through the physical process of fluorescence, where the molecule absorbs light at a specific excitation wavelength and subsequently emits light at a longer emission wavelength (National Institutes of Health).
