Fluoride release for anti-caries effect refers to the sustained availability of fluoride ions in the oral cavity, typically via topical agents such as toothpaste, mouthwash, or dental varnishes. Fluoride acts by inhibiting demineralization of enamel, promoting remineralization of subsurface tooth structures, and interfering with acidogenic bacterial metabolism within plaque. Its primary effect is local, as low, sustained concentrations of fluoride in oral fluids can be incorporated into newly forming tooth minerals, creating fluorapatite—an acid-resistant mineral—thus reducing dental caries risk. Fluoride-containing drugs (e.g., silver diamine fluoride, sodium fluoride) are used topically for this purpose. Excess fluoride exposure, especially in young children, can lead to dental fluorosis, while agents such as silver diamine fluoride may cause discoloration of treated lesions.
Increases resistance of enamel to acid dissolution by forming fluorapatite. Accelerates remineralization by attracting and incorporating calcium and phosphate ions into enamel. Inhibits bacterial metabolism in dental plaque, primarily by disrupting acid production and enzyme activity.
