Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)

Target
FDG
Molecular classification
Glucose analog, Radiopharmaceutical
01

Overview

Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is a radiopharmaceutical used in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. It is an analog of glucose where one hydroxyl group is replaced by the radionuclide fluorine-18. FDG is used to visualize tissues with high glucose uptake, such as tumors, areas of inflammation, and metabolically active brain regions. It is the most commonly used PET tracer.

02

Mechanism of action

FDG is taken up by cells similarly to glucose but is trapped intracellularly after phosphorylation by hexokinase. The accumulation of FDG reflects the glucose metabolic activity of the tissue. The 18F isotope emits positrons, which are detected by PET scanners to create images of FDG distribution.
