Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a chemotherapeutic agent whose active metabolite, 5-fluorouridine triphosphate (FUTP), is incorporated into cellular RNA in place of uridine triphosphate (UTP). This process results in modified RNA molecules that disrupt normal RNA processing and function, leading to inhibition of protein synthesis and cytotoxicity, particularly in rapidly dividing cancer cells. The extent of RNA incorporation can be measured, but a direct correlation with clinical response hasn't been firmly established, with thymidylate synthase inhibition appearing more predictive.
Fluorouracil is metabolized to FUTP, which is incorporated into RNA in place of UTP, disrupting RNA processing and function.
