Fms-like tyrosine kinase receptor 1 (FLT1), also known as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR-1), is a member of the receptor tyrosine kinase family. It functions primarily as a cell-surface receptor for several key angiogenic factors, including VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and placental growth factor (PlGF). FLT1 plays an essential role in embryonic vasculature development and regulation of blood vessel formation. The soluble form sFlt‑1 acts as an antiangiogenic molecule by binding free VEGF-A and PlGF in circulation, reducing their availability to activate membrane-bound receptors on endothelial cells. Abnormal expression or function of FLT‑1/sFlt‑1 has been implicated in several pathological conditions including preeclampsia, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.
