Overview

Fms-related tyrosine kinase 1 pseudogene 1 (FLT1P1) is a processed pseudogene and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located in the human genome, related to the protein-coding gene FLT1 (also known as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1, VEGFR1)[2]. Unlike its parental gene, FLT1P1 does not encode a functional receptor protein but exerts regulatory effects at the RNA level. FLT1P1 is upregulated in preeclampsia and can modulate the biological activity of trophoblast cells by influencing the stability of FLT1 mRNA. Mechanistically, FLT1P1 recruits the RNA binding protein DKC1 to stabilize FLT1 mRNA, thereby restraining trophoblast proliferation and angiogenesis; knockdown of FLT1P1 promotes both proliferation and angiogenesis in trophoblasts[2]. FLT1P1 represents an example of how pseudogenes can have important non-coding regulatory functions, especially in placental biology and potentially in pathologic conditions like preeclampsia[2].\n\nKey distinctions:\n- FLT1P1 is not a protein, enzyme, receptor, or drug target; it acts as a non-coding regulatory RNA, not as a traditional druggable target.\n- Its principal disease association is as a regulator in preeclampsia, not as a direct therapeutic or diagnostic marker[2].\n\nNo drugs target FLT1P1 directly, and it is not part of canonical signaling or enzymatic pathways. \nNo notable safety concerns or biomarker status have been identified.
