Foam at the liquid-gas interface in the rumen is a physical structure formed by the entrapment of fermentation gases within a stable matrix of small bubbles. It consists of gas bubbles (mainly CO₂ and methane) stabilized by surface-active agents present in the rumen fluid, such as soluble leaf proteins, saponins, hemicelluloses, and bacterial mucopolysaccharides. Excessive foam formation prevents normal eructation, leading to rumen bloat, a potentially life-threatening condition for ruminant animals.
Antifoaming agents reduce surface tension, destabilizing the foam and allowing gas to escape.
