The folic acid (folate) metabolic pathway in bacteria is a biosynthetic route essential for the production of tetrahydrofolate (THF), a cofactor required for one-carbon transfer reactions involved in DNA, RNA, and amino acid synthesis. Unlike mammals, which must obtain folate from their diet, many bacteria can synthesize folic acid de novo from simple precursors. This pathway is critical for bacterial growth and survival and has been validated as an effective target for antibacterial drugs.
