Follicle Stimulating Hormone Receptor (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Receptor, Glycoprotein hormone receptor
01

Overview

The follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) is a transmembrane protein belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. It specifically binds follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a glycoprotein hormone essential for reproductive processes in both males and females. FSHR activation is necessary for the hormonal actions of FSH, including regulation of gametogenesis, folliculogenesis, oocyte maturation in females, and spermatogenesis in males. Emerging evidence suggests additional roles outside gonadal tissues—including potential involvement in cancer biology, fat metabolism, and bone density regulation—but these are less well characterized compared to its reproductive functions.

Mechanism of action

FSH binds to FSHR, triggering conformational changes and activating intracellular G proteins, leading to downstream signaling cascades such as cAMP production through adenylate cyclase activation.
