Follicle-stimulating hormone secretion pathway

Molecular classification
Biological pathway, Signal transduction
01

Overview

The follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion pathway is a complex physiological process within the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis that regulates reproductive development and function (StatPearls, 2023). It is initiated by the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which binds to receptors on pituitary gonadotrophs to trigger FSH production (NIH, 2022). This pathway is subject to intricate feedback loops involving gonadal steroids and peptide hormones like inhibins and activins (Endotext, 2020). In clinical practice, this pathway is a major focus for treating infertility, where FSH analogs are used to induce ovulation, and in managing hormone-sensitive conditions like prostate cancer or endometriosis, where GnRH modulators are used to suppress FSH and LH levels (PubMed, 2021). Understanding the dynamics of this pathway is essential for diagnosing and treating various endocrine and reproductive disorders (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

Mechanism of action

Modulation of the pathway occurs primarily through GnRH receptor agonism or antagonism to control pituitary FSH release, or through direct administration of FSH analogs to stimulate FSH receptors (StatPearls, 2023; FDA, 2022).
