Overview

Follistatin is an autocrine glycoprotein that acts as an antagonist to members of the TGF-β superfamily, particularly activin and myostatin. By binding to these ligands, follistatin prevents them from interacting with their receptors, modulating downstream signaling pathways. It plays a role in muscle growth and reproductive hormone release. Elevated levels may be associated with increased risk for certain diseases.
