Target intelligence / Profile preview
Food stagnation is a diagnostic term primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), known as 'Shi Zhi,' to describe a pathological state where food accumulates in the gastrointestinal tract due to impaired digestive function (NIH/NCCIH, 2023). It is not a biological molecule, receptor, or enzyme, and therefore does not qualify as a therapeutic target in the molecular sense. Instead, it represents a clinical syndrome characterized by symptoms such as epigastric fullness, abdominal pain, acid regurgitation, and foul breath, often correlating with Western medical diagnoses like functional dyspepsia or gastroparesis (PubMed: 30103444, 2018). Because food stagnation is a condition rather than a protein, it lacks a molecular classification. Therapeutic interventions, such as the herbal formula Bao He Wan or prokinetic drugs, aim to restore normal gastric motility and promote the breakdown of food through enzymatic activity (StatPearls: Dyspepsia, 2023). In a drug discovery context, researchers would target specific molecules like the Ghrelin receptor or Dopamine D2 receptors to treat the underlying physiological causes of what is clinically described as food stagnation.
Treatment strategies focus on the stimulation of gastrointestinal motility and the enhancement of digestive enzyme secretion to resolve the accumulation of undigested matter.
