Formaldehyde-releasing agents are a class of chemical compounds that gradually liberate formaldehyde under standard usage conditions, primarily in water-based environments. Their main use is as preservatives to prevent microbial contamination and prolong shelf life in cosmetics, personal care products, and certain industrial fluids. Common examples include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and bronopol.
