Formaldehyde-releasing agent

Molecular classification
Other (chemical preservative; not a protein, receptor, or enzyme; best classified under chemical agents)
01

Overview

Formaldehyde-releasing agents are a class of chemical compounds that gradually liberate formaldehyde under standard usage conditions, primarily in water-based environments. Their main use is as preservatives to prevent microbial contamination and prolong shelf life in cosmetics, personal care products, and certain industrial fluids. Common examples include quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and bronopol. These chemicals can sensitize skin, provoke allergic reactions, and have been linked to carcinogenic risk due to their capacity to release formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen. Regulatory scrutiny surrounds their use, especially regarding undisclosed formaldehyde presence in consumer products. Because "formaldehyde-releasing agent" is not a specific molecular target but rather a chemical class, it should not be treated as an individual drug target for structured pharmacological databases.
