Formyl peptide receptor 1 (FPR1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that plays a central role in the innate immune system. It is primarily expressed on phagocytic and blood leukocyte cells, where it mediates responses to N-formylmethionine-containing oligopeptides released by invading microorganisms or damaged tissues. FPR1 directs these immune cells to sites of infection or tissue injury and stimulates them to kill pathogens or clear debris. Upon ligand binding FPR1 activates intracellular signaling cascades via G proteins. This leads to chemotaxis toward infection/injury sites, production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), degranulation, cytokine expression, phagocytosis, and changes in cell surface marker expression. FPR1 functions as a sensor for both infective agents and endogenous danger signals from damaged mitochondria.
