Fracture stabilization

01

Overview

Fracture stabilization refers to mechanical methods (such as internal fixation using plates, screws, rods, or external fixation devices) or casting/splinting techniques that immobilize a fractured bone to promote proper alignment, healing, and restoration of function[7][8]. It is a physical intervention, not a molecular entity, and serves as a critical step in the treatment of bone fractures to allow biological repair processes (i.e., hematoma formation, callus formation, osteogenesis, remodeling)[3][7]. The process does not act through molecular interaction or receptor-ligand binding but instead facilitates cellular and molecular events underlying bone repair by providing an optimal environment for healing[2][3][8].

Safety considerations

Infection (if surgical hardware is used)Non-union or delayed union (failure of bone to heal properly)Hardware failure (migration or breakage of plates, screws, rods)Compartment syndrome (pressure build-up from swelling)Neurovascular injury (risk during surgery or by fracture movement)
