Overview

Frataxin pseudogene 2 (FXNP2) is a genomic sequence similar to the functional frataxin (FXN) gene but is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it does not code for a functional protein product and does not play an established biological or pathological role. It should not be confused with the functional FXN gene, which encodes the mitochondrial protein frataxin—a critical participant in mitochondrial iron regulation, iron-sulfur cluster assembly, and tightly linked to Friedreich ataxia if mutated or dysregulated[1][2][3][4]. There are no known therapeutic roles, biomarkers, or drugs acting on FXNP2 itself.
