Free fatty acid (FFA) mobilization from adipose tissue refers to the process by which stored triglycerides in fat cells are broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol, which are then released into the bloodstream for use as energy substrates by other tissues, especially during periods of fasting, exercise, or stress. Mobilization is primarily achieved through lipolysis—a multi-step enzymatic process involving ATGL, HSL and MGL. Regulation involves stimulation by catecholamines and glucagon, and inhibition by insulin. CD36 facilitates FFA transport. This process occurs predominantly in white adipose tissue.
