Free Fatty Acid Release from Adipose Tissue (FFAR)

Target
FFAR
Molecular classification
Biological Process, Metabolic Pathway
01

Overview

Free fatty acid (FFA) release from adipose tissue is a central metabolic process in which stored triglycerides within adipocytes are hydrolyzed, primarily during fasting or energy demand, to liberate FFAs and glycerol. These FFAs are then released into the circulation to serve as an energy source for other tissues such as muscle and liver. The process is tightly regulated by hormones like insulin (inhibits) and catecholamines (stimulates). Dysregulation of FFA release is implicated in various metabolic diseases, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Targeting pathways regulating FFA release holds therapeutic potential for treating these conditions.
