A free radical scavenger is a substance, often an antioxidant, that protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. It neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other free radicals, preventing oxidative stress and cellular damage. These scavengers can be enzymatic (e.g., catalase, superoxide dismutase) or non-enzymatic (e.g., vitamins C and E). The mechanism of action involves hydrogen atom transfer, single electron transfer, or sequential proton loss electron transfer.
