In humans, these polymers are not broken down by endogenous digestive enzymes but serve as vital prebiotics, selectively fermented by beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) such as butyrate (NIH: PMC6041804). While they promote gut health and metabolic function, fructans are also significant components of the FODMAP group, which can cause gastrointestinal symptoms in individuals with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) due to their osmotic effects and rapid fermentation (StatPearls: NBK562224). Beyond nutrition, specific fructans like delta-inulin are utilized as potent vaccine adjuvants (e.g., Advax) due to their ability to modulate the innate immune system via pathways involving Toll-like receptors (PubMed: 25410551).
