Overview

Fucose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase (FPGT) is an enzyme that catalyzes the salvage pathway in GDP-L-fucose biosynthesis by converting GTP and L-fucose-1-phosphate into GDP-L-fucose and diphosphate[1][4][3]. L-fucose, an important sugar in glycoproteins and glycolipids, plays a key role in cell–cell recognition, signaling, and immune functions[1][5]. FPGT is especially significant in tissues such as liver and kidney, where it enables reuse of fucose derived from glycoprotein and glycolipid turnover[1][3]. This enzyme belongs to the family of transferases, specifically the nucleotidyltransferases that transfer phosphorus-containing nucleotide groups[7][4]. The FPGT gene encodes this protein, and its dysfunction can affect glycosylation through impaired fucose salvage and utilization[1][3][5]. There is no current evidence for drugs directly targeting FPGT or its use as a biomarker or having known safety concerns in therapeutic contexts.
