Fumarate reductase is an enzyme that catalyzes the reduction of fumarate to succinate, a key step in microbial anaerobic respiration. It exists in soluble (NADH-dependent) and membrane-bound (quinol-dependent) forms. It plays a crucial role in energy metabolism for many bacteria and some eukaryotes under anaerobic conditions. While generally absent from mammalian cells, emerging evidence suggests possible roles in pathological states such as cancer cell metabolism.
