Fungal Cell Membrane Ergosterol Biosynthesis Enzymes

Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Fungal cell membrane ergosterol biosynthesis enzymes are a group of enzymes responsible for the production of ergosterol, the principal sterol in fungal membranes. Ergosterol is functionally analogous to cholesterol in animal cells and is essential for maintaining membrane structure, fluidity, permeability, and the activity of membrane-bound proteins. These enzymes are major targets for antifungal drugs because ergosterol is unique to fungi and disruption leads to loss of membrane integrity and cell death. Key enzymes include squalene epoxidase (ERG1) and sterol 14α-demethylase/CYP51/ERG11.
