Fungal cell membrane synthesis enzymes are a group of plasma membrane-associated proteins responsible for the biosynthesis of key structural polysaccharides that form the fungal cell wall. The most prominent among these are chitin synthases and β-1,3-glucan synthases, which catalyze the formation of chitin and β-1,3-glucan, respectively. These enzymes are essential for fungal growth, morphogenesis, and viability. Because these enzymes do not have direct homologs in humans and play essential roles in fungal survival, they represent prime targets for antifungal drugs.
