Target intelligence / Profile preview
Fungal cell wall synthesis is the complex process by which fungi build and maintain their cell wall, a structure essential for survival and interaction with the environment. Key components include chitin, glucans (primarily β-1,3-glucan), and mannoproteins. Biosynthetic enzymes such as chitin synthases, glucan synthases, and proteins involved in GPI anchor synthesis are crucial. As the fungal cell wall and its synthesis pathways are unique to fungi, they represent excellent targets for antifungal drug development. Inhibiting these pathways disrupts cell wall integrity, leading to fungal cell death or growth inhibition.
Inhibition of fungal cell wall component biosynthesis, leading to compromised cell wall integrity and fungal cell death or growth inhibition.
