Fungal lipid metabolism enzymes are a diverse group of proteins responsible for the synthesis, modification, and degradation of lipids in fungi. These enzymes play essential roles in cell membrane formation, energy storage, signaling, adaptation to environmental changes, and pathogenicity. They are considered promising targets for antifungal drug development due to their unique features compared to mammalian lipid metabolism. Key enzyme classes include fatty acid synthases, acetyl-CoA carboxylases, fatty acid elongases, desaturases, lipases, triacylglycerol synthases, phospholipases, sphingolipid biosynthetic enzymes, ergosterol biosynthetic enzymes, and β-oxidation pathway enzymes. These enzymes are localized in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and peroxisomes. Targeting these enzymes can disrupt fungal growth and virulence.
