Ergosterol-containing membranes are biological membranes found predominantly in fungi and some protozoa. Ergosterol, analogous to cholesterol in animal cells, is essential for maintaining membrane structure, fluidity, and function. These membranes regulate permeability, participate in lipid raft formation, and influence various cellular processes. They are major targets for antifungal drugs such as polyenes and azoles, which exploit the absence of ergosterol in human cells.
