FCU1 is a synthetic fusion enzyme combining cytosine deaminase and uracil phosphoribosyltransferase activities. It is used in genetic engineering as a selectable marker—cells expressing FCU1 convert non-toxic 5-fluorocytosine into cytotoxic 5-fluorouracil and its phosphorylated metabolites, allowing for selective cell elimination upon 5-FC treatment. This tool is widely utilized in laboratory genetic manipulations but is not a native protein in humans or other model organisms, nor is it a therapeutic target[3].
