The fusion (F) glycoprotein of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a viral surface protein essential for the virus's ability to enter host cells. It mediates the fusion of the viral envelope with cellular membranes, allowing viral RNA to access the host cell cytoplasm. The F protein is synthesized as an inactive precursor (F0), which requires proteolytic cleavage to become fusogenically active. It is the primary target for neutralizing antibodies and a key focus for vaccine development efforts.
