The fusion (F) glycoprotein is a major surface protein on the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and is essential for viral entry. It mediates fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membrane, releasing the viral genome. The prefusion conformation is a metastable state that is highly immunogenic and a prime target for neutralizing antibodies. It exists as a trimer composed of F1 and F2 subunits and undergoes significant structural rearrangements upon activation. Stabilization of the prefusion state is a key strategy in vaccine development to elicit stronger protective immunity against RSV.
