Fusobacterium necrophorum surface antigens encompass a variety of proteins and polysaccharides located on the outer membrane of this Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium. The most significant among these is the leukotoxin (LktA), a secreted protein that remains associated with the bacterial surface and is the primary virulence factor responsible for lysing host white blood cells (Nagaraja et al., 2005, Journal of Animal Science). Other critical antigens include outer membrane proteins (OMPs) like FomA, which acts as a major porin, and various adhesins and hemagglutinins that facilitate bacterial attachment to host tissues and contribute to biofilm formation (Narongwanichgarn et al., 2003, Journal of Veterinary Medical Science). These antigens are the primary targets for veterinary vaccines, such as Fusogard, which aim to prevent liver abscesses and foot rot in cattle by inducing neutralizing antibodies (Checkley et al., 2005, Canadian Veterinary Journal). In human medicine, these surface components are studied for their role in Lemierre's syndrome and are potential targets for diagnostic assays and therapeutic interventions (Riordan, 2007, Clinical Microbiology Reviews).
