G protein subunit gamma 11 is a member of the gamma subunit family of heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) and is encoded by the GNG11 gene in humans. As part of the heterotrimeric G protein complex (which also includes alpha and beta subunits), GNG11 is anchored to the cell membrane via lipid modification and is essential for the complex’s function in coupling G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) to downstream signaling pathways. This protein is required for correct signal transduction processes—including the regulation of second messenger pathways—and enables G protein beta-subunit binding. Altered expression of GNG11 has been found in certain disease states, including lymphomas and retinal degenerative diseases, although there are currently no drugs known to specifically target this subunit or clinical mechanisms of action established for pharmacologic intervention[1][4][8].
