Overview

GNG5P5 is a processed pseudogene found at chromosome locus 13q14.2[1][7][3]. Pseudogenes like GNG5P5 are genetic sequences similar to known genes (in this case, GNG5), but they are non-functional due to mutations or lack of transcriptional activity[7][3][9]. GNG5P5 produces a transcript (ENST00000420444), but there is no evidence it encodes a functional protein[1][7]. Pseudogenes, however, can sometimes contribute to biological regulation, for example by acting as competing endogenous RNAs to modulate gene expression, though such a role for GNG5P5 has not been experimentally validated[1]. GNG5P5 has emerged in genome-wide association studies as a locus with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with risk for asthma and COPD, but the mechanistic significance is unclear; it is not considered a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1]. The functional GNG5 gene is a part of heterotrimeric G proteins and involved in signal transduction; GNG5P5 only mimics this sequence but lacks clear gene activity[4][8].
