Target intelligence / Profile preview
G protein subunit gamma 7 is an integral component of heterotrimeric G proteins, partnering with alpha and beta subunits to mediate signal transduction from GPCRs at the cell membrane. The gamma 7 subunit is essential for proper assembly and stoichiometry of G protein complexes, especially in neural tissue such as striatal medium spiny neurons, thereby influencing dendritic morphology and synaptic function. In cancer, notably gastric cancer, GNG7 acts as a tumor suppressor: its downregulation promotes cell proliferation and tumor progression, while upregulation induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. The gene is regulated with multiple splice variants and subject to post-transcriptional modulation, which impacts its cellular localization and abundance. GNG7’s roles span both physiological brain signaling and pathological processes like cancer, making it a notable biomarker and candidate therapeutic target.
For potential drugs targeting GNG7: Inhibition of cell proliferation by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Physiologically: Transduction of signals from GPCRs through the G protein heterotrimer, contributing to downstream activation/inactivation of effectors like adenylate cyclase.
