Overview

G protein subunit gamma 8 (GNG8) is a protein expressed in humans and encoded by the GNG8 gene[2][3][5][6]. It is one of the gamma subunits that combine with beta and alpha subunits to form heterotrimeric G proteins, which are critical modulators and transducers of various transmembrane signaling systems, especially those coupled to G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs)[2][6][7]. The gamma subunits help regulate nucleotide exchange and effector interactions in G protein signaling cascades. GNG8 is involved in signal transduction, particularly in the central nervous system, where it is enriched in regions such as the habenula and has been implicated in regulating acetylcholine levels and synaptic plasticity, impacting learning and memory in animal models[1]. While GNG8 is associated with some disease loci and phenotypes, it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, nor are there any approved drugs that specifically act on this subunit[2][3][5][6].
