Overview

GABA transaminase (GABA-T) is a pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme responsible for the degradation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. By degrading GABA, GABA-T helps regulate inhibitory signaling in the brain. Inhibition of GABA-T increases brain levels of GABA and is a therapeutic strategy for conditions like epilepsy. Mutations in the ABAT gene, which encodes GABA-T, can cause GABA-transaminase deficiency, leading to severe neurological symptoms.
