GABAA Receptor Beta Subunit (GABAAR β)

Target
GABAAR β
Molecular classification
Ligand-gated ion channel, GABAA receptor subunit, Neurotransmitter receptor
01

Overview

The GABAA receptor beta subunit is an essential component of the GABAA receptor, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter receptor in the mammalian brain. It forms part of the pentameric receptor complex responsible for mediating fast synaptic inhibition via chloride ion influx upon GABA binding. Three beta subunit isoforms (β1, β2, β3) exist, each contributing to distinct receptor properties and drug binding sites. The presence of at least one beta subunit is required for functional receptor assembly. Beta subunits are implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders due to their role in inhibitory neurotransmission.
