Overview

GABPB1 intronic transcript 1 (GABPB1-IT1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed from the GABPB1 genomic locus on human chromosome 15[5]. It is not translated into a protein, but fulfills important regulatory roles at the RNA level. GABPB1-IT1 is primarily involved in the regulation of the cell cycle and DNA-associated processes, including chromatid cohesion, mitotic division, and DNA replication[2]. The lncRNA also acts as a microRNA sponge—most notably for miR-93—enabling the upregulation of miR-93 targets such as pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF)[4]. Lower expression of GABPB1-IT1 has been linked to increased cancer cell proliferation and poor survival in multiple cancers, suggesting its utility as a prognostic biomarker but not as a direct therapeutic target. No direct drug interactions or therapeutic interventions targeting GABPB1-IT1 are currently known[2][3][4][5].

Mechanism of action

Acts as a competitive endogenous RNA ("sponge") that binds and sequesters specific microRNAs such as miR-93, thereby indirectly upregulating targets of these miRNAs (e.g., pigment epithelium-derived factor/PEDF)
