GABRA6 antisense RNA 1 (GABRA6-AS1)

Target
GABRA6-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), antisense RNA
01

Overview

GABRA6 antisense RNA 1 is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 5 that overlaps with the sense strand encoding GABA receptor subunit alpha-6 (GABRA6). This lncRNA (also called ARBAG) regulates the stability and expression of GABRA6 mRNA, influencing the ratio of mRNA isoforms and affecting protein functionality. The variant rs4454083 within ARBAG alters its abundance in the cerebellum and is associated with plasma C-peptide levels, implicating a role in insulin bioavailability. Increased ARBAG expression leads to the destabilization and cleavage of GABRA6 mRNA, which can result in dysfunctional GABA-A receptor subunit and altered synaptic regulation. Its function thus primarily lies in gene regulation rather than direct pharmacological targeting[3][5][7][10].

Mechanism of action

N/A; no drug mechanisms targeting this molecule reported

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (specifically controls the expression and stability of GABRA6 mRNA)Modulation of synaptic function (indirectly, through GABRA6)Potential involvement in regulation of insulin signaling (via C-peptide)
04

Disease associations

May be associated with neuropsychiatric disorders through GABRA6 modulationPossible link to metabolic traits by regulating C-peptide and insulin bioavailabilityNo direct evidence for roles in cancer, inflammation, neurodegenerative disease, or infection found in current sources
05

Safety considerations

None reported; as it is not directly targeted by drugs, safety concerns are limited to potential gene regulation effects that might impact GABRA6 function
06

Biomarkers

Associated variant rs4454083 affects C-peptide levels; possible implication as a biomarker for insulin bioavailability
