Overview

The GAGE family pseudogene (ENSG00000196395) is a nonfunctional DNA segment with high sequence similarity to functional GAGE genes, which encode small, acidic proteins found mainly in cancers and testis[1][7]. Pseudogenes are regions of the genome resembling genes in sequence but lacking the ability to produce a functional protein, often due to mutations or missing regulatory elements[2][5]. While GAGE family proteins are studied for their roles in cancer immunology and prognosis, pseudogenes of the GAGE family do not encode proteins and thus are not considered therapeutic targets, biomarkers, or sources of adverse effects[2][5][6]. Their main relevance is in genetic annotation and evolutionary studies, clarifying the organization, duplication, and variation within gene families[3][6].
