Galanin-like peptide (GALP) is a 60-amino acid neuropeptide expressed primarily in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary. It is encoded by its own gene and is structurally related to galanin, sharing homology in the receptor-binding region. GALP acts via galanin receptors (GalR1, GalR2, GalR3) in vitro, though evidence suggests it may have its own specific receptor in vivo, which remains unidentified. Its principal biological roles include the regulation of energy homeostasis (appetite, metabolism, and thermogenesis) and reproductive functions, mediated in part by sensitivity to metabolic hormones such as leptin and insulin. GALP also influences the hypothalamic-pituitary axes (notably the HPT and reproductive axis), stress responses, and possibly inflammation. While not itself widely targeted by drugs, GALP serves as an important mediator between nutritional state and reproductive viability, and its pathways may be of interest for future therapeutic investigations[1][2][5].
