Overview

Galectin-12 is a tandem-repeat galectin (lectin family) protein with two carbohydrate-recognition domains, mostly found on lipid droplets in adipocytes. It regulates lipid degradation via modulation of protein kinase A signaling, influences cell differentiation and apoptosis, inhibits macrophage polarization to the M2 population (promoting inflammation), and has been implicated in metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and adipocyte biology. Galectin-12 differs from other galectins in the sequence and carbohydrate-binding capacities of its CRDs, and its expression is highly specific to fat tissue. The protein may serve as a metabolic regulator and potential therapeutic target for obesity, diabetes, and related inflammatory conditions
