LGALS17A (galectin 14 pseudogene) is classified as a human pseudogene belonging to the galectin family, annotated as the Charcot-Leyden crystal protein pseudogene. Genomic analyses confirm its identity as non-protein-coding due to truncations, missing exons, and premature stop codons, which prevent the formation of a functional carbohydrate-recognition domain and protein product. LGALS17A is weakly transcribed in various tissues, notably including placenta, but does not generate an active galectin protein. While the galectin family is biologically important for cell–cell interactions, apoptosis, and immune regulation, LGALS17A itself should not be confused with functional galectin-14 (LGALS14) or Charcot-Leyden crystal protein (CLC/Galectin-10), which have well-defined roles in immune responses and diseases. Its characterization as a pseudogene indicates it is not a valid target for therapeutics, biomarkers, drug development, or disease modulation[3][1][2][6].
