Galectin-related protein (LGALSL)

Galectin-related protein is a member of the galectin family, which usually consists of carbohydrate-binding proteins, but its galectin domain largely lacks the critical residues necessary for canonical carbohydrate and lactose binding. Structural studies show that it comprises a single conserved carbohydrate recognition domain, plus unique N-terminal residues, and likely possesses a functional mode distinct from other galectins. The biological function remains unclear, although it is predicted to be involved in carbohydrate binding. Currently, it is not recognized as a therapeutic target or as a biomarker, and there are no known drugs that interact with this protein. Disease association is limited, with some genetic links to congenital generalized lipodystrophy, but functional or mechanistic roles in pathology are insufficiently established.
