Overview

Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2, commonly known as Marek's Disease Virus (MDV), is a highly contagious and oncogenic alphaherpesvirus that primarily infects chickens. It is the causative agent of Marek's disease, a condition characterized by the rapid development of T-cell lymphomas, nerve enlargement (polyneuritis), and immunosuppression (Merck Veterinary Manual). The virus is unique for its ability to integrate its DNA into the host genome, specifically within the telomeres, leading to the neoplastic transformation of T-lymphocytes (NCBI Taxonomy). MDV is transmitted through the inhalation of infected dander and dust in poultry environments. While vaccines such as the Rispens strain and the Herpesvirus of Turkeys (HVT) are widely used to control clinical symptoms, they do not prevent infection or viral shedding, which has historically contributed to the selection of increasingly 'hot' or virulent strains (Wikipedia). Therapeutic research focuses on the viral Meq protein and DNA polymerase as potential targets for preventing lymphoma and viral replication.
