Overview

Gallium-68 radioisotope is a positron-emitting radionuclide with a physical half-life of approximately 68 minutes. It is produced from a ^68^Ge/^68^Ga generator, making it widely accessible for clinical PET imaging without the need for an onsite cyclotron[1][2][3][4][6][8]. Ga-68 is used to label a variety of molecules, most notably somatostatin analogs (e.g., Ga-68-DOTATATE, Ga-68-DOTATOC, Ga-68-DOTANOC), for high-resolution PET imaging of neuroendocrine tumors and other cancers[2][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The utility of Ga-68 radiopharmaceuticals lies in their rapid pharmacokinetics, high target-to-background ratios, and ability to provide sensitive and specific diagnostic information. However, Gallium-68 itself does not have biological activity, does not act as a protein or receptor, and is not a therapeutic target; its role is purely as a radiotracer label enabling molecular imaging in nuclear medicine.

Safety considerations

Some safety concerns are related to radiation exposure, although the short half-life of Ga-68 (about 68 minutes) reduces overall patient dose
