Galyfilcon A is a silicone hydrogel polymer used as the base material for Acuvue Advance contact lenses, developed by Johnson & Johnson Vision Care. It represents a significant advancement in biomaterials by combining high oxygen permeability with a high water content (47%), facilitating better corneal health compared to traditional pHEMA-based hydrogels (Source: Eye & Contact Lens, 2003, PMID: 12544914). The material surface is characterized by the "Hydraclear" technology, which involves the internal incorporation of a wetting agent, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), to maintain surface moisture and improve wearer comfort without the need for surface treatments (Source: Optometry and Vision Science, 2007, PMID: 17435512). While Galyfilcon A is not a biological target like a receptor or enzyme, its surface properties are critical for its interaction with the tear film and the ocular microbiota.
