Gametocyte Surface Protein PFS230 (Pfs230)

Target
Pfs230
Molecular classification
Surface protein, PGSH family protein
01

Overview

Pfs230 is a large, cysteine-rich surface protein expressed by the malaria parasite *Plasmodium falciparum* during its sexual stages. It is a leading target for malaria transmission-blocking vaccines (TBVs) due to its essential role in parasite development and transmission from humans to mosquitoes. It is required for male/female gamete fusion, essential for male gamete exflagellation, and involved in interaction with host erythrocytes; parasites lacking Pfs230 cannot bind red blood cells or develop into oocysts within mosquitoes, thus blocking transmission. Antibodies against specific regions—especially domain 1—can block parasite transmission.
