GGN

Overview

Gametogenetin (GGN) is a protein encoded by the GGN gene, mainly expressed in testicular germ cells, where it is thought to play an essential role in spermatogenesis and male fertility[1][2]. Alternative splicing of GGN gives rise to at least three protein isoforms: GGN1, GGN2, and GGN3, which differ in their cellular localization and interaction partners[1][2]. GGN is not present at significant levels in other tissues. It is believed to interact with proteins such as Fanconi anemia complementation group L (FANCL) and gametogenetin binding protein 1 (GGNBP1), influencing processes including germ cell proliferation and intracellular membrane trafficking[1]. Disruption of GGN function has been associated with male infertility disorders such as spermatogenic failure and globozoospermia[2][3]. No therapeutic agents are known to target gametogenetin, and it is not considered a classical drug target, but rather a protein relevant to reproductive biology and germ cell physiology[1][2][3].
